-Immaculate Heart College Art Department Rules

FOCUS ON MATERIALITY
In between the words that we have chosen to visualise I have gotten the word materiality. First I wanted to focus on experienceable but then the word was taken so Loes suggested to have materiality and connect it to the topic.
I started of with the general research and afterwards I started the collaging process in photoshop. I have decided to work this week purely digitally.
THEME
what is materiality?
what is the definition of materiality?
Notes for all of the readings:

Co-Art: Artists on Creative Collaboration
-Problem in working together because art is personal, it comes from the inner; that is what makes it hard to work together; everyone experiences different things and tries to express them in a different way

-Art is:
questioning
expressing yourself
showing the unseen
originality
autorship
show possibilities / innovation
doing things differently
making it experienceable
tool - functionality
-What are aesthetics? The set of values related to nature and beauty. In design it refers to visual attractiveness, aesthetics affect the product. It is about the personal experiences, emotions and ideas; it is strongly subjective.

-What is the difference between critique and criticism?
Criticism is about talking negatively about a thing without any purpose, it is about judging.
Critique is about critical review, critical discussion.
Social critique can arise in different areas, it can appear because of inequalities.

-Difference between artist and designer?
Designer is always keeping the target group in mind, while artist's first intention is to express himself and not necessarily pleasing the certainty target group.
Groundwork: Leslie Hirst
-Leslie mentions the failure to serve as a great learning tool; failure as opportunity
-reminding yourself that each failure is a result of big experimentation and trying
-all the details matter, each subject that you are starting to learn needs to be efficient; good film making skill is just of the same importance of precise work, realisation of the importance of instincts to experiment
-the problem of being an artist/designer is that it is not only about knowing your own discipline but about knowing a bit about everything else beside as well

-Few practical lessons which she gives when making:
1. Begin by looking at options, which is different from acting at random.
2. Learn to see by thinking more complexly about visibility.
3. Use everything that you know and record everything.
4. Don't try to get to the end without taking all the steps necessary to get there.
5. Understand that what you are learning is not the same as what is being taught.
Immaculate Heart College Art Department Rules
-The text includes 10 strict rules which we should obey in order to create great things.
-It suppose to guide us and make it easier by giving us these rules
-Trying to lead us through the process with positive thoughts and with the intention of experimentation.
I encountered several explanations of materiality which actually confused me from the beginning but at the end it helped me bring all the definitions and connect it to a new context of technology.
first definition
second definition
-defined as "things that are material," which emphasizes the physical aspect of things but on the other hand art means something which can be worked up or elaborated, or of which anything is composed
-word matter, came into English from the French materie, also from an ultimately traceable word, materia , from which 'root' meanings are derived, as a Latin word, materie refers to a building material, usually timber (with which the word may be etymologically associated); thence, by extension, any physical substance of anything
-it is also defined as that which constitutes the 'matter' of something: opposed to formality; the quality of being material; material aspect or character; mere outwardness or externality
-attends to the relationship between the visual and the material as a way of approaching both the meaning of visual and its other aspects
-is about social meaning and practice; where identity, power, space, and geometries of seeing are approached here through a grounded approach to material technologies, design and visual research, everyday embodied seeing, labour, ethics and utility
third definition
-a quality possessed by something that has a place in the physical world
-What is matter? This is where the lines are blurred
-objects can be broken down in to molecules or crystal lattices, which can be further divided into individual atoms
-a more “material” object is viewed by people as being something tangible, whereas something towards the “immaterial” end of the spectrum is more aptly described in terms of physically intangible things like thoughts and feelings
-materiality extremely important to mechanical engineering – everything we do deals with material. How materials behave under certain conditions, how to modify materials to achieve a certain goal, and how to choose which materials are best for a certain task, for example
FINAL ZINE SPREAD
-the base for this zine spread was research on materiality and afterwards I developed collage according to that
-the collage was this time digitally made by using photoshop
-the result is because of that a bit more clean and structured compared to the zine from the previous week
-when doing it manually it looks more tangible, so that is the down side of using the photoshop
